                UARS WEEKLY STATUS REPORT - 21 Nov 2003

********************************************************************

***********
SOLSTICE
***********

During this week SOLSTICE continued to operate in good health gathering
solar data on all available orbital tracking periods. On average, we
received 54% of each day's data amounting to about 390 minutes of solar
observing time per day.

***********
SUSIM
***********

SUSIM was turned on again after the yaw-around on Nov. 13. After
warmup, the instrument successfully gathered all of its daily mid
(1.1 nm) resolution, weekly offset, and O2 occultation scans during
periods of UARS telemetry or periods of onboard tape recording.

A surplus DEC Alpha processor has been added to the SUSIM
VAX-cluster to serve larger capacity, modern disk drives and
hopefully to provide added processing power for specialized
compute-intesive analysis calculations. Many thanks go to Michael
VanHoosier for successfully accomplishing this upgrade.

                           REPORTING PERIOD

This report covers 08 November 2003 (Orbit 66518, GMT Day 312) through
14 November 2003 (Orbit 66622, GMT Day 318).

                         SPACECRAFT OPERATION

The observatory is now in Forward Flight (Southern Hemisphere viewing)
and is performing nominally under two-battery operations. The
instrument operational changes were:

                    INSTRUMENT OPERATIONAL CHANGES

       Instrument    Time          Orbit     Comment
       SOLSTICE 313/2303 66347 FULLTIME TO DAY ONLY
       SUSIM         313/2303      66347     POWER OFF
       SOLSTICE 317/1439 66602 DAY ONLY TO FULLTIME
       SUSIM         317/1626      66603     POWER ON
       PEM 318/1256 66616 POWER ON (Z/H DAY ONLY)

A Reverse-to-Forward Yaw Around maneuver (number 124) was successfully
executed in Orbit 66573 beginning 315/17:14:55Z and completing at
315/17:52:05Z on 11 November 2003. All instruments were in their off
or standby mode (except for SOLSTICE in day-only). Due to the SA
position at 269 degrees, the effective night length of the spacecraft
after the maneuver was approximately 55.43 minutes. Post maneuver
analysis of data indicate that during the Yaw Around, the end-of-night
load bus voltage was 26.24 volts and the average depths of discharge
(DODs) on Batteries 2 and 3 were approximately 20.39 and 19.81 percent
respectively. The next (forward-to-reverse) YAW is scheduled for 11
December 2003 (DOY 345).

The beta angle ranged between the angles of 12.7 degrees to 12.1
degrees for this report period. The beta angle is now increasing
towards a maximum angle of 36 degrees on 27 November 2003 (DOY 331).

Spacecraft battery 1, 2, and 3 performance monitoring continues.
Battery 1 remains OFF the charge relay. Battery 2 and Battery 3 are
currently maintaining greater than 23.6 V end-of-night (EON) load bus
voltage. Battery temperatures are stable with a temperature delta
between Battery 2 and Battery 3 of 0.95 to 0.96 degrees C. Additional
battery performance data for each battery on 07 November and 14
November 2003 are provided in Appendix D.

The clock error ranged from -10.0 to 10.3 msec during this report
period. Clock rate adjustments are listed in Appendix C.

All instrument and subsystem engineers were advised on the initial
excursion of ALERTS or Out-Of-Limits conditions detected by the FOT
for this report. A summary is listed below and the details of ALERT
and Out-Of-Limits occurrences are listed in Appendix B.

    OUT-OF-LIMITS  =    00
    ALERTS         =    00

The following real-time command sheets were executed for the listed
operational element(s) during this report period (see Appendix A).

    FOT       =    05
    SUSIM     =    02
    SOLSTICE  =    02
    PEM       =    01
    HALOE     =    00
    HRDI      =    00

UARS Anomaly Reports initiated during this report period are listed in
Appendix E and summarized below.

    FOT  =    03

Two (2) Anomaly Reports remained OPEN at the end of this report period
(see Appendix E).

                        GROUND SYSTEM OPERATION

Three (3) operational support problems occurred this period. Anomaly
Reports are included in Appendix E.

The data loss calculations are no longer being supplied by Data
Capture Facility (DCF).

                       OTHER SIGNIFICANT EVENTS

                       UARS SATELLITE OPERATIONS

A few database changes were requested to modify the state text of a
few 3 TDRS pertinent mnemonics on the new Eclipse software release.
These changes were delivered and tested on 14 November 2003. All
changes were made correctly and the FOT is now ready to start using
this release against the spacecraft for final checkout.

The problem found with the CMS-B pollers last week is still
unresolved. Software development has been working on this issue, but
the root cause has yet to be found. Testing and analysis will
continue next week and hopefully a solution can be found quickly.

In parallel, the FOT is also working with the FSW group to review and
test the new flight software uplink procedure. Testing has gone well
so far and should be completed by next week, so that the end-to-end
testing can begin.

                               MEETINGS

Also the FOT called a 3 TDRS transition meeting on 13 November 2003 in
order to discuss the progress of current efforts and outline a
probable date for uplink of the new FSW. The original target date was
next Thursday 19 November 2003, but will most likely now be set for
the first week of December 2003. The results of the remaining testing
needed will determine the exact date.

                       FUTURE SIGNIFICANT EVENTS

The next UARS Yaw slew is scheduled for 11 December 2003 (DOY 345).
This maneuver will be a Forward to Reverse Flight maneuver (Northern
Hemisphere viewing).
